In qlub, tipping is configurable for businesses. We noticed that with restaurants that have tipping, our monthly transactions are increasing. The reason was that the waiters were recommending customers to use qlub for their payment. They became our best marketers. We decided to promote this section in our product.
Discover
Conversion rate of tipping in qlub was "6%" which comparing to lyft and uber that reported this amount
Promoting Tip section would make the waiters have an incentive to promote qlub. So it’s safe to say that promoting tip is promoting qlub!
Define
- Conversion rate of tipping is low
- Commission free tip is not clear
- How much user pays is not clear
Ideate
1- Adding engagement via illustration
2- Adding engagement via Icon
3- Adding Most common tips for that restaurant
4- Adding a writing that clearly shows the selected tip amount whether its amount based or percent based.
5- Open a modal if user wants to pay without adding tip
6- Open a modal if user splits the bill
7- Pre selected tip amount
Design
A team consisted of PMs, Developers and designers gather to brainstorm ideas and prioritize them based on technical effort and impact on user experience or conversion rates according to teams assumptions. Regarding this,
- Adding engagement via Icon/ illustration may have same impact but illustration need more effort, so we removed it from list
- Opening a modal after user splits the bill to ask user to add tip may have less impact than opening modal after clicking on pay the bill CTA, so we removed it from list
Deliver
After carefully considering the researches and resources I designed the new version of the tip section - Conversion rate of tipping raised from 6% to 12 % after this redesign
- Overall revenue of qlub increased with restaurants that enabled tipping feature
